How a Murder Mystery Dinner Party Works, Step by Step
A murder mystery dinner party is a game you play across one long meal. Each guest plays a suspect, the clues come out during the meal, and after dessert everyone has to name the killer. Here’s how a night of Murder at Hollyfield Hall runs.
1. Arrival
Guests arrive in costume and put on their name tags. Each one gets an envelope with their first round card. The host reads the opening scene aloud, then the rules.
2. Round one, with starters
Everyone introduces their character and starts asking questions. After about 15 minutes, the host reads the first three clues and leaves them face up on the table. Talk carries on for another 10 minutes or so.
3. Round two, with the main course
New envelopes go round, and secrets start to come out. After about 15 minutes, the host reads three more clues.
4. Round three, with dessert
The final cards, the last three clues, and about half an hour of debate. Anyone may put one last question to anyone.
5. Accusations
Everyone writes down who did it, how and why, and hands their sheet to the host.
6. The reveal
The host opens the sealed solution and reads it aloud. Points go to the best detective. Then each guest reveals their own private goal for the night and whether they reached it.
The rules that make it work
Only the murderer may lie. Everyone else has to tell the truth when asked a direct question, though they may keep a secret until someone asks about it. Nobody reads the solution until the very end, not even the host.
The whole night takes about three hours with dinner. And the host can play too, if a friend who isn’t coming prepares the envelopes beforehand.
